Terms of use

Last updated 11 September 2026.

The software

PhonePad is free software under the GNU General Public License, version 3 or later. That licence, not this page, governs what you may do with the code. You may use it, study it, change it and share it; if you distribute a modified version you must share your source under the same terms.

The wire protocol under protocol/ is licensed separately under Apache-2.0, so anyone may write a compatible client or companion.

No warranty

PhonePad is provided as is, without warranty of any kind. This is the ordinary position for free software and it is stated in full in sections 15 and 16 of the GPL. Nobody is promising it will work, and nobody is liable if it does not.

In plain terms: this is a side project given away for free. Use it because it is useful, not because anyone is accountable for it.

The name

"PhonePad" and "DynShift" are trademarks and are not covered by the software licence. You may fork the code freely; give your fork its own name. The trademark policy sets out what is fine without asking, which is most things.

This website

The content here is provided for information. It is kept accurate and every performance figure is measured rather than claimed, but it may still be wrong or out of date, and nothing on it is a guarantee.

The site design, logo and written content are not covered by the GPL and are not licensed for reuse.

Third parties

PhonePad requires the ViGEmBus driver, which is separate software by different authors under its own licence and terms. Installing it is your decision.

Xbox, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Game Pass and Windows are trademarks of Microsoft Corporation. PhonePad is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Microsoft. Whether you may use PhonePad with a particular service is between you and that service.

Acceptable use

Do not use PhonePad to break the rules of a game or service you are using — anti-cheat systems, competitive integrity and the terms of the platforms you play on are your responsibility. PhonePad presents an ordinary controller and does nothing to conceal itself, automate anything, or gain an advantage.

Changes

These terms may change; the date above changes with them, and the history is public in the repository.
